Everything about a "monster" tank. Link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1000_Ratte Is this tank operational ? Does it exist somewhere in a museum ? Awaiting opinions and more informations

| It was planned to built, but Hitler selected Maus over Ratte. So it stays only as a wild idea. I doesn't exist anywhere except paper.

| To bad  anyway it was enormous so i don't think that in the actual events ( the allies closing in ) Hitler could have built such a monster of steel...even the Maus was super heavy so i can't imagine how the that thing could have been moved

| Well it was...i mean he wasn't going to risk building a machine that couldn't even move.The Maus was indeed a pleasant alternative.But the idea itself of building such a monster of steel was risky and i think he knew it.Maybe

| The Germans only needed time. The latest tank projects for example Panzer IX & X look like very modern and advanced tank designs. Just think how world would change if Hitler never ordered to attack the Soviet Union. Probably they would unite and conquer all the world. He did the same mistake like Napoleon when he chose to attack Russian Tsardom instead of Britain.

| There where only two Maus tanks created (as prototypes of course). One tank was sabotaged by German soldiers and the second one was unfinished (without a turret). When the occupation of the Germany began the Russians took both tanks. The sabotaged tank's turret was mounted on the unfinished one. So now there's only one Maus tank left in the world (Kubinka Tank Museum, Russia to be exact). I believe it's still operational  . More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maus_Tank

|  i guess i got i wrong. I knew about the russians capturing two Maus tanks but i didn't knew there were only 2 created.There were some videos that showed the Maus in action.If the Maus would have been a fully operational tank,the allies would have had a lot of firepower over their heads. I would have died to see to a Landkreuzer. But i guess the Maus will be enough

anyone notice the step up from 28 cm guns to 80 cm?
wouldnt that make it impossible to carry more than a handful of rounds?
i mean, 15 rounds or so is going to put you at another 100 tons total weight...
im begining to think that...bunker tanks are the future! i have to say though, hitler seeing something as unrealistic was a big step up for him haha.
then again...flying missle bombs probably looked pretty unrealistic at first too. :edit:
i think even if the german produced a large amount of maus though...they wouldnt have worked out well (not against the russians at least)...
they would have been incredibly cumbersome against the t-34.
its weight might have caused problems to...i think russian summers leave the ground incredibly wet and boggy...

| Well Hitler had it's plans...he saw some kind of future in heavy tanks but the Landkreuzer was a monster.Even if he would have created one of those,it would have become stuck in deep mud and at it's size,infantry could have easily sneaked near it and plant a couple of TNT's.The Maus was a indeed a super-heavy tank with potential but with 2 tanks built,there wasn't much to do.If Hitler would have created a battalion of them,we could have seen more from the germans before the end.Even against the russians  imagine if they dispatched a battalion of Maus tanks and put them in defence somewhere in Poland for example.I think that if they would have found the power and strategy,the Maus would have changed the war in some way.But as Frederich the Great used to say "No army is great without resources",and couldn't agree more.The Landkreuzer would have been a resource-eater then if created.

alternate history in the real purpose of the word. I think of the "Moscow" episode as a sad one because of the cold he stopped near Moscow...if only he would have listened to his generals
